Recommendations for primary levels

The following companion resources are published by the Primary English Teaching Association Australia in order to support primary teachers to deliver climate change science content and the related language and literacy skills to their students.

Teaching the language of climate science change (Hayes & Parkin, 2021)


Teaching the Language of Climate Change Science by Julie Hayes and Bronwyn Parkin makes clear links between the Australian Curriculum: Science and the Sustainability cross-curriculum priority and helps teachers in developing scientific language and thinking to prepare students for active citizenship in a world facing human-induced climate change.

Awarded best Primary Reference Teaching Resource at the recent Educational Publishing Awards Australia, judges described it as "a well-designed and engaging resource that... provides a pathway for climate education in the form of a teaching and learning progression that also addresses curriculum outcomes in science and literacy. A highly relevant and cohesive resource, it equips today’s teachers with everything they need to address this important topic in their classrooms." The Language of Climate Change Science: A preschool to Year 8 Teaching and Learning Progression was developed by Bronwyn Parkin and Julie Hayes and published by PETAA in collaboration with The Australian Science Teachers’ Association, and other educators, scientific experts and academics including Cool Futures members. The progression supports teachers and students in gradually making the links between science and climate change at an appropriate level of understanding for each year level. The language focus of the progressions ensure that students will be able to talk, read and write scientifically about climate change and its causes and effects — and learn that they can be part of the solution.
