Managing vocabularies and categories with SKOS

For describing scholarly resources we need to agree on a vocabulary. Some vocabularies are widely agreed upon, but for much relevant information, there is no controlled vocabulary. We use two web standards for describing bibliographic resources: Dublin Core and SKOS.

The two are quite different: DC is a small vocabulary for describing creative works such as books, articles, and video in generic terms. SKOS is not prescribing a specific vocabulary but is a way for describing the structure of controlled vocabularies, of thesauri.

This working paper describes in more detail how RDF, Dublin Core and SKOS go together for producing meta-data on bibliographic resources.
